What is Bare Boat?

The terminology describes renting a yacht for independent sailing, a sail boat, a catamaran or a motor boat. Previous experience in the field of sailing is required, but you can hire a professional skipper to sail the yacht for you. Common sizes for rent range from 30 to 50 feet with a number of cabins varying, depending on the size and structure of the boat.

The yachts are equipped with everything needed for sailing, mooring and day-to-day operation, including sheets, towels and kitchen utensils but without special extras such as a windsurfer or spinner sail. These can be rented separately. In some cases the dinghy is included in the price, but will sometimes be considered as a supplement.

Do I need a license to rent?

For the purpose of renting a yacht, there is not necessarily a requirement to present a sailing license, but extensive experience and appropriate skills are required in order to prove the ability to sail the yacht alone.

Rental companies are interested in realizing that the renter has experience in navigating a yacht of the relevant size or similar size, and may require the renter to attach a skipper at his expense, if they are deemed necessary.

Countries like Greece and Turkey require a speedboat or yacht license. If there is no such license, documents attesting to maritime experience must be presented.

On what days of the week can I rent?

In most companies, the rental begins, as well as ends, on Saturday. Some companies allow you to rent on other days of the week.

How many days are there in a "Sailing Week"?

Usually a full week, starting and ending on the same day of the week. In the Caribbean most rentals start at noon, although cruise managers can start at nine in the morning. In such a case it is advisable to arrive at the port of departure the day before. In the Mediterranean it is customary to receive the boat until five in the afternoon on the day of departure and return it by 9 am on the day of return.

What does the price include?

Payment is for the yacht, its equipment and insurance for the hull only. Additional expenses to consider are: port taxes, fuel, food, personal travel insurance and airline tickets.

How do I book a yacht?

It is necessary to deposit a forward fee ranging from 25 to 50 percent of the rental price, depending on the rental company, sign the rental documents, and present documents verifying previous sailing experience and other relevant paperwork.

What is the cancellation protocol?

Most companies have reasonable cancellation fees, if cancelled in advance 90 to 60 days before the scheduled departure. The closer the cancellation is to the planned departure date, the higher the cancellation fee and the entire deposit may not be refunded.
